• Phonemic Awareness
     
    Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the separate sounds in spoken words.  Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound in spoken language. 
     
    The following activities can be done with your child and can be made into fun games at home or during rides in the car:
     
    • Clapping the syllables in words and sentences
     
    • Marching in time with music
     
    • Say three words to your child, then say 2 of them.  Ask what word was left out.
     
    • Say a compound 2-3 syllable word very slowly and ask your child to tell the word you are trying to say.
     
    • "Say cucumber. . . Now say it again but don't say cu."  Response: "cumber"
     
    • "Say beat. . . Now say it again, but don't say /b/." Response: "eat"
     
    • "Say beat. . . Now say it again, but instead of /b/ say /m/.  Response: "meat"
     
    • "Tell me all of the sounds you hear in bike."  Response: /b/ /i/ /k/
